What is Counselling?

Counselling takes place when a counsellor meets clients in a private and confidential setting to explore the problems that the clients are experiencing, to help them make choices for change and support them through their chosen process.

How Does Counselling Work?

By listening carefully and patiently and asking questions the counsellor can begin to perceive the difficulties from the client's point of view and can help them to see things more clearly, possibly from a different perspective.

Counselling is about increasing choice and reducing confusion. It does not involve giving explicit advice or directing a client to take a particular course of action. In good counselling, you are always in control of what happens, what you talk about or choose not to talk about.

Counselling can help the clients to fully understand their situation, explore the options open to them and set goals for the future if needed.

Counselling will also support the clients when they are putting their plans into action by providing them with coping skills and other tools and techniques to enable them to create a better future.

Who counsellor is?

Counsellors do not judge or exploit their clients in any way. In the counselling sessions, the clients are free to explore and talk openly about various aspects of their lives and feelings that might have been previously bottled up such as grief, anger or anxiety.

The counsellor will encourage the expression of feelings and pursuant to their training will be able to accept and reflect the client's problems without becoming burdened by them.

Acceptance and respect for the clients are essential for any counsellor and as the relationship develops, so too does trust between the counsellor and client, which helps ensure the success of the therapeutic process.

The counsellor may help the clients to examine in detail the relationships, behaviours or situations that are proving troublesome and to find an area where it would be possible to initiate some change as a start.
